banner10ANIVERSARIO_2015

Today, November 30 we are celebrating our tenth birthday. A decade full of hope, changes, sport and service combined in one resort consisting of a Hotel, Aparthotel, 24 Villas, an Olympic Pool as well as a sports hall. Click here for further information about these and other facilities.

10 years ago we decided to differentiate ourselves from the other resorts of Fuerteventura and set on a segment largely unknown in 2005.

Within 10 years our resort strongly evolved with its new facilities. We celebrated great success with sports such as triathlon and trailrun – but also we made mistakes we made up for with strong willpower and a smile.

We hold a high number of repeated customers, receive support from the island´s institutions and have a professional and highly-motivated team, giving its best each day in pursuing the target to offer our clients the best active holidays of their lives.

We hope to welcome you and everybody forming the Playitas-Family soon at Playitas Resort…Happy Birthday! 🙂

 *****

Interview to John Chilver-Stainer, the architect who designed Playitas Golf

John Chilver Steiner 4

Last week we were ‘honoured’ to host our golf course architect and a true ‘gentleman of the links’ Mr John Chilver-Stainer at Playitas Resort and we caught up with him for a chat and a coffee!

We know you designed Playitas Golf but are you also a golfer?

I’ve played golf since I was a child growing up in Scotland. I began playing with the hickory clubs of my great grandfather, captain of Cowal G.C in 1892. I still play regularly and particularly enjoy playing the classic links golf courses of Scotland.

When did you first visit Playitas and how was your first impression?

In 2003 I was asked to visit Playitas to make a preliminary project. The original concept was to create an 18-Hole Par 72 up the valley above the road and have a practise facility on the sea side of the main road. I was quite excited, as the land to the top of the valley would have provided a magnificent golf course. The elevated topography, rocky outcrops, the natural barancas, the old walls, the wind mills, natural grass land, scrub growth and rich brown stony landscape was captivating. The strong blues of the sky and sea viewed from the course with the rising sun made a fantastic contrast with the brown ochre and terra cotta colours of the hills.

Are you satisfied with how the course has turned out?

Although the project had to be reduced in size I am very pleased how the golf course turned out.

The holes below the road with the water hazard and stream, integrated into the garden style of the Hotel Resort are visually dramatic. The baranca makes the Par 3’s demanding to play.

The holes above the road were conceived to integrate the natural environment of the surrounding landscape. The golf course constructor Shaper Golf under the management of Braulio Uribe took great care not to damage the surrounding natural areas and enhanced the barancas with carefully chosen rocks. Their modelling of the fairways and greens followed my conceptual planning to perfection. I am also very pleased with the choice of the paspalum grass for the fairways recommended by the agronomist Braulio Uribe, which can be maintained to allow the ball to run similar to the Links golf courses of Scotland.

Have you designed other golf courses and where?

Most of my golf courses have been constructed in Switzerland where I am resident. However I also have a golf course in Scotland near Edinburgh and another I helped with in the highlands of Scotland.

What makes Playitas Golf special or different for other golf courses?

Playitas is very much it’s own golf course. There is nothing quite like it. It is this uniqueness that makes it special and different from other golf courses.

The unusual routing runs up and down the valleys between the imposing stony cliffs and hills and over the barancas. Natural coarse grasses, scrub and plant life are allowed to blend in with the sides of the golf course without any foreign plants or the clichéd Palm Trees often used on other golf courses.

Garden plants and Palm trees are only placed on the golf course near the Hotel Resort.

The natural barancas at the bottom of the valleys tie the golf course together and are fully integrated into the shot playing.

Unusual for the Canary Islands is an 18-Hole Golf Course with a Par of 67.

Like other golf courses in Scotland with a Par of 67 it puts more emphasis on the Par 3’s, which are often more demaning than Par 4’s and 5’s. The course has 3x Par 5s, 7x Par 4’s and 8x Par 3’s which calls for all the clubs in the bag.

In the end it is not just the Par that defines the quality of a golf course but many other parameters.

A golf course can only be special when it has variety and a certain originality of it’s own.

John Chilver Steiner 2 What’s your favourite golf course in the world?

It’s not easy to name just one as each have their individual special qualities. However the course I enjoy playing the most is The Old Course, St. Andrews, Scotland.

They’ve told me that you have a bit of a “cult following” culture to your golf courses. Is this true? And why are your designs different?

Apparently there is a cult following as I have many fans of my courses. I believe the difference my golf courses have to other designs is the natural bonding of the golf course to the unique surroundings of each individual site and environment. The searching and discovering for this natural bond leads to an interesting and authentic variety of holes and in turn avoids any repetitive clichés and formulaic golf design.

The variety will present the golfers with some unusual shot-making and offer them a choice to make a strategy to play the hole.

The greatest difference of my golf courses though, are the Greens and surrounds which have multiple complex slopes shaped organically to appear like natural undulations. On these greens the golfer will have a different variety of chips, pitches and putts with each round he plays.

What are your current projects?

At present I have 4 projects in the planning phase in Switzerland and which I hope will be realised in the near future.

What kind of play would be most suited to play Playitas Golf?

Playitas golf course is a very attractive golf course but requires more than just basic skills to enjoy playing it. There are many side slopes, forced carries and running fairways and of course the wind.

Playitas is therefore ideal for players advancing from the beginner stage to an intermediate stage where they will have the opportunity to learn and practise many of the shots required in the repertoire of an accomplished golfer.

With the great practise facilities it is an ideal place to improve and enhance their game and get expert advice from our Scottish head pro Murdo McCorquodale.

Good golfers will find that Playitas, in spite of the Par 67, has a variety of interesting holes to test all the clubs in the bag.

I hope many golfers enjoy their golf at Playitas and continue their never ending struggle to catch the next birdie.

Golf and Tennis Tournaments

Cartel Golf

And the question became to you. How  do I control these emotions so that I can play to the best of my ability?

Of course we are talking about the tennis and golf tournaments which are coming to Playitas Resort in a few days. The Playitas Golf Open and The Playitas Tennis Open.

On May 10, 2014 we start with the first of the tournaments. The Playitas Golf Open. At Playitas Golf, everything is ready for a  Classic Golf Tournament in Fuerteventura. The course looks pretty good, Murdo is very excited and all the golfers are expecting to repeat the big moments they enjoyed last year. Of course, Playitas Resort is ready to give a warm welcome to all players and golf lovers. But Golf seems to take more time than most sports to get a good grasp of how to hit the ball, or even how to act on a golf course. Don’t worry about it! Just enjoy the course and have fun!😉

So let’s go for the second one in a row. On May 22, 2014  the Playitas Tennis Open will take place at Playitas Tennis Courts. Prize money: 2.000 € and a grand prize draw. Jörg is so excited as Murdo about this event. But to enjoy the tennis open you must keep your diet. Loading up on carbohydrates the night before is not an effective way to prepare your body for the competition. You need to build up your nutrient stores in advance, so start eating carb-heavy food — like pasta, oatmeal, salad, and rice — four days before the Playitas Tennis Open begins. Carbs are your main source of energy, so consume more of them heading up to your match, even if it means cutting down on your intake of meat and other proteins.

Likewise, increase your potassium intake. Eating two bananas – Plátano de Canarias is the best – every day, three or four days before your tournament will help you retain water. During the week leading up to the tournament, you should also be drinking water throughout the day. You’ll probably spend more time than usual in the bathroom :-(, but proper hydration is absolutely necessary for your muscles and to prevent cramps. But as we wrote about the Playitas Golf Open… just enjoy the competition and don’t forget an easy thought …Free Your Mind! 😉

Talking with Murdo. A life around the world of Golf

DSC_0051

Everybody who comes to Playitas Resort should meet Mr. Murdo McCorquodale or just Murdo. Considered a gentleman by all his colleagues, Murdo shows us his human side and talks about his life.

Hi Murdo! Where do you come from?

Hi! I come from Scotland! The highlands of Scotland 🙂

When did you start to play golf?

My father was a golf professional and like a Swiss child learns to ski as soon as they can walk and maybe a Spaniard starts to play football, a Scottish kid has a golf club in the hand and plays Golf.

DSC_4156Why did you finish up in Fuerteventura?

Ha, ha, ha… that’s a long story! My wife is from Ibi, near Alicante. It was not easy to get a job in Spain. Basically in order to get a job in Spain, you need german more than spanish in my business, in the Golf world. First thing we did was we moved to Germany to learn the language and we stayed there for a couple of years and then I was offerer a job in Portugal which we thought, well… it’s “almost” Spain (laughs) so we moved to Portugal, we stayed in the Algarve which is a really nice place to live  for a couple of years but it was not an easy place to work – economically- there are a lot of poor people and a lot of multimillionaires but nobody really in the middle and it was  quite a difficult time as a self employed Golf professional to find enough work. From there I was offered a job in Egypt which was actually  two fantastic years. It was a great place to live with very service minded people and a great place to work but when Ana became pregnant  we decided we wanted to eventually move to Spain.

DSC_4206

Playitas Resort got in touch with me and offered me the post of Head Pro mainly because as a PGA pro with the ability to speak English, Spanish and German it was ideal for the resort. I fell in love with Playitas Golf course because of it’s potential and  it’s beautiful views on every hole with no surrounding houses  and no kids screaming… It’s something different which I still really love.

Who’s your favorite Golf player?

I did love Severiano Ballesteros but unfortunately he died two years ago, he was every golfer’s hero. I don’t have any particular favourites (unless I have a bet on them) but I do always have a big interest in European Ryder Cup player Paul Lawrie as I used to work with him in Scotland and he is a friend, Jose Maria Olazábal is another golfer who is a real gentleman on and off the course.

So you are a Spanish fan…

Definitely! The Spaniards play Golf with a lot of passion and flare and they play a different style of game actually. They all have fantastic short games.

What can you tell about the Playitas Golf Course?

Playitas Golf is very different. It’s not your normal new Golf course because when new Golf courses are built, they are basically all the same. There are 4 par 5’s, 4 par 3’s and 10 par 4’s, it’s the standard . That is par 72. Playitas is short but very quirky. It’s more like what I’m used to playing in Scotland. It’s a par 67, it is short  but that doesn’t mean it is an easy course, it is very tricky, especially when the wind blows. Anyone can birdie a par 5 but it’s much harder to birdie a par 3, it is a good test for all levels of golfer. The Scottish designer has used the natural slopes and features to create a very links like golf course. Links basically is a description of the British style seaside courses which are always firm and depending on the wind direction on each day can vary considerably.

Do you play other sports?

I do. To be honest I like cycling, I like windsurfing, I like diving and football but I am Scottish so I’m not very good at football. I prefer to watch Glasgow Rangers.

Did you play as a professional golfer?

Yes. I won my first tournament as a pro and earned 677 pounds and then it went downhill from there to be honest (hahaha). You have to  be 100% dedicated purely to your golf career and I didn’t do that, I Iiked other things like girls, football and the occasional beer unfortunately or Scottish Triathlon!! 🙂 🙂 🙂 I was good at Golf but I have never been Tiger

Murdo anuncio golf

Woods’ standard and I knew that but I still play Pro level and compete on a National level when I can. I have a family, I have a wife and two children and being a good dad and husband is the most important thing for me. I also have always loved to teach people which I seem to be more talented at.

If you didn’t play Golf, what would you do?

I’d be a singer. I love singing. It’s my biggest passion. I love swing and jazz music. I have a big passion for this.

One day I see myself having a swing bar, not a swingers bar (before you say anything), a cool place with a piano, good live music, cocktails, maybe some healthy food and in a big city.

And the last question…

Go for it!

What’s different here?

The weather is unbelievable. Summer is not too hot and we have great conditions in the winter. The Golf course is always in good condition and we have the Hotels next door to the course. The Beach is close by and we have the best sports facilities to combine with Golf. There are many good Restaurants and the island has two other Golf courses to play which compliment Playitas golf very well. It’s pretty much “heaven on earth”. It’s a very relaxed sports resort with a Golf course and I like the type of golfer that plays here – not too serious and always patient with less experienced players.

Thank you very much, Sir!

De nada! 🙂
